Russia’s parliament claims West wants to disrupt dialogue with Russia

The Resolution of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly which contains a condemnation of the Stalinist regime is, according to a joint statement from the Council of the Federation and the State Duma reported by RIA Novosti, “an attempt to disrupt the developing dialogue between Russia and the West”.

The Resolution “is a scarcely concealed attempt to place on one level Nazi Germany and one of the main States of the anti-Hitler coalition and founders of the UN – the USSR”, the statement from Russia’s parliament reads. “This is a direct insult to the memory of millions of our compatriots who gave their lives during the Second World War for the liberation of Germany from the fascist yoke, so that the descendents of the fallen would live in a free and peaceful Europe”.

“It is absolutely unwarranted to call for 23 August – the date of the signing of the Non-aggression pact between the USSR and Germany – a Remembrance Day for the victims in equal measure of Stalinism and Nazism, as well as the attempt to present this document as the spark which lit the war., the statement continues.  “… attempts to forget inconvenient facts of our common past and give a current political sound to unilaterally advantageous but historically unjustified versions and interpretations can in no way contribute towards the aim stated in the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly Resolution with regard to uniting divided Europe”.

As reported here (see the whole Resolution at the link below) the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly Resolution passed on 3 July notes that in the 20th century, European countries experienced two major totalitarian regimes, the Nazi and the Stalinist, which brought along genocide, violations of human rights and freedoms, war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The Russian delegation labelled the decision anti-Russian and a political gesture.
